Flame Testing for Ignition and Burning Behavior

Flame testing evaluates how materials, components, and finished products respond to a defined ignition source. Depending on the governing method, the equipment may use a needle flame, a Tirrill or Bunsen-style burner, a wing-tip burner arrangement, or a burn-test fixture with specimen supports and measurement accessories.

Standards note: confirm the required burner geometry, flame height, gas supply, burner angle, specimen support, hood environment, timing, and acceptance criteria in the applicable standard and clause.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a needle flame burner and a Tirrill or Bunsen burner?

A needle flame burner provides the small ignition source specified by needle-flame methods. Tirrill and Bunsen-type burners use different burner geometry and flame conditions for other flame and burning tests.

What does the flame height jig do?

The flame height jig is used to verify the flame height of a needle flame burner so the burner is set to the required flame condition before testing.

Why would a lab need a flame hood?

A flame hood provides a draft-free enclosure for burner-based flame testing.
